How To Bless A Villain

Today we shall skate on some thin ice, drive near the edge of the cliff, eat sushi or whatever high risk behavior analogy works for you.  Anyway, I did want to mention that there is a legitimate way of praying a blessing for another person that doesn’t appear on its face to be a blessing – at least in the short term or in the classical sense of that word. This form of praying has to be done with great care because it can easily devolve into cursing. We don’t want that. So, let’s lift the lid on what we might refer to as “praying around” a problem situation or person.

We need to begin with an agreed upon universal villain. For simplicity, let’s just imagine a local, illicit drug dealer. Poisoning and creating addicts is not an optimal career path but some choose to do it. How do we pray for them? To “bless” that sort of public rogue seems offensive. And it is. We certainly don’t wish them to prosper.

When confronted with something that is manifestly evil, we need to pray a blessing in keeping with the Lord’s Prayer. For example, that line in there that says: “…and deliver us from evil”comes in pretty handy. Now granted, Mr. Drug dealer hasn’t shown much interest in being delivered from evil, but when I think about it, I’ve been somewhat unreceptive to that prayer myself now and again! The thing is to pray it. And Jesus has helpfully placed the entire Lord’s Prayer in the first person plural. (i.e. Our Father…lead us not…deliver us…and such).  So, even though I might pray the Lord’s Prayer as an individual, I’m allowed to keep in mind a host of others as I make my prayers. In this instance, I choose to bring along the local drug dealer as I pray.

Now granted, his “deliverance from evil” might very well include getting caught, prosecuted and sent to jail. On his end, it will not seem like much of a blessing. Most likely it will feel like a curse. But in the long run – and by that I include the longest of long runs, i.e. eternity –  blessing him in this way has the potential to interrupt evil and rescue his soul.  I’m only sharing this because I’ve seen these sort of prayers work on a number of occasions and at times, remarkably fast. And this “praying around” a problem person keeps us on the road of loving the sinner while hating the sin.
