Sightings, Part 5

As Jesus appeared in the room, seemingly from out of nowhere, he brought with him a word of blessing: “Peace be with you.” The kind words did not make purchase – offering not a whit of comfort to the room full of jittery disciples. Sometime ago in our studies we watched as a boatful of disciples screamed in terror at what they thought was a ghost. In that moment they had signaled their collective belief in phantoms. And they had mistaken Jesus for one of those as he strolled across the water toward them on that dark and stormy night. And now, as they were gathered in their secret lair, they were once more convinced that a spirit was in their midst. Jesus continued: He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?  Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. Luke 24:38-40

Luke describes the reaction and it is important that we not miss this profound insight: And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement… Luke 24:41a Their emotions, in the moment, raced ahead of a clear understanding of what was happening. Their emotions raced ahead of belief. Remember what Jesus had just said: “…why do doubts rise in your minds? You see, Jesus had no interest in merely curing a temporary moment of depression or by offering a temporary emotional high. What he was offering them was objective truth – himself and his body – alive. He needed to convert their minds. He knew their emotions would follow along in good time.
