Welcome to 2018!

Let me be one of the first to welcome you to 2018! I appreciate so much the family that has grown up around Graceful Notions. And thanks to all of you who dropped a line with words of encouragement, questions, disagreements, etc. I have enjoyed it all and have tried to respond to each inquiry. All of you remain in our prayers.

When I first did this back in 2012 I was committed to one year of writing. I completed that task and then busied myself with other writing projects including plays and storytelling messages which I shared with the good people of Patrick Crossing. In addition to that, life happened and we welcomed into our world one grandchild after another. It was not an idle season between 2012 and 2017.

When I felt the nudge to begin writing again, I thought it would be much the same. Write for a year and then take a breather. That has turned out not to be the case. Graceful Notions has grown significantly and I feel drawn to continue to “work out my faith with fear and trembling” with you each day. It is starting to feel like a lifetime mission. That is daunting if I think too much about it, so I won’t! We are not called to worry and fuss about tomorrow but to simply do our best today. So, onward!

In addition to the daily writings I also preach weekly messages to a lovely congregation that gathers at the historic Henry Strater Theatre in downtown Durango, Colorado.  On January 7, we will begin a new series entitled: Benedictus, which is the Latin word for Blessing.

Why? I’ve been both troubled by and a party to the many negative, curse-like words that have flown about the past few years as our culture seems bent on self-destruction. Recriminations, hate, bitterness and unforgiveness are nothing new –  they’ve been around since shortly after creation. What is different is the technological ease we possess to spread the virus quickly. God’s remedy to that is to speak forth blessings to the world as not only a defensive bulwark but as a positive cure. I believe in the power of our words to enact a kingdom reality on this earth. It may sound naïve, but it is inarguably biblical. If you want to look over my shoulder at these efforts, we publish them through our Patrick Crossing app ( see bottom of page for link) and the messages are usually uploaded for listening by Tuesday. If you live nearby and haven’t found a church home, you’re welcome to throw in your lot with us and experience it all in real time. Our Celtic worship band does a fine job of turning our attention to heaven.

So thanks again for reading! May your 2018 be filled with joy and the pursuit and fulfillment of your good dreams and desires…

Benedictus,
CJ
